FAQs - Frequently
Asked Questions
|
Do you give the houses away? |
| |
No, Habitat for Humanity is not
a handout; it's a hand up in life. Partner families work with
Habitat to construct their home and the homes of other families.
The families are required to put in a minimum of 250 (single parent) or
500 (two-parent) "sweat equity" hours. Once the home is
complete Habitat sells the home at a no-profit, no interest loan to
the family.
|
| Who qualifies for a Habitat
home? |
| |
Families are selected based on their income (30%
- 60% of the local median income) and ability to pay the mortgage, their
need for adequate housing, and their willingness to partner with Habitat.
|
| How is Wabash Valley Habitat for
Humanity funded? |
| |
Wabash Valley habitat relies on monetary and
material donations from churches, individuals, corporations, foundations,
and other organizations that are moved by concern and compassion to help
those in need. After the home is sold all mortgage payments get
recycled into a "Fund for Humanity" account which is used to build more
houses for families in need.
|
| Is my income level too high to
qualify for this no-profit, no interest opportunity? |
| |
Maybe not. Your income needs to be
sufficient to cover your living expenses and the monthly mortgage payment.
We use the local median income and the number of children in your family
to determine the eligible income range. Following is the current
(2009)
eligibility income table:
